Summary

The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act was enacted in 1974 and marked the beginning of a new national response to the problem of child abuse and neglect.  The legislation provided Federal assistance to States for prevention, identification, and treatment programs.  It also created the national Center on Child Abuse and Neglect.  The first National Child Prevention Week originated in 1982 and in 1983 April was proclaimed as the first National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Efforts to address child abuse and neglect have been highlighted in April ever since at the national, state and local level.

Child Abuse Prevention Month is a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse and neglect, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families.  During the month of April and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities and promote prevention across the country.
